Audience Theory

Passive Audience: This is the idea that audiences passively take in information (take in information without reacting) from the media and that these messages have the same effect on everyone. By this I mean that the audience take the intended message from the media they consume.

Active Audience: This is the more modern idea that audiences actively take part with and make conscious choices regarding the media they consume. By this I mean that the audience all react to the media in different ways and sometimes take the unintended message from the media they consume.

Hypodermic Needle Theory: This is the suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds. This assumes no individual difference in audience members.

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE:  Learning something that you did not know before

IDENTITY: Personally relating to something

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: Escapism from your normal life

RELATIONSHIPS: Forming relationships with characters or celebrities so you're invested in what happens to them next.

In the clip the audience gains information and entertainment. An example of where the audience gains information is at 1:28 where the narrator mentions " New science and new technology ", which indicates new facts and data about the sea will be found in this documentary. The audience gains entertainment throughout the clip in the form of visuals and the serene relaxing tone of the documentary.
