Representation

1) List the people, places and groups represented in the poster.
In the poster, there are 7 adolescents, 3 are girls and the other 4 are boys. They are stood in front of a London estate and are wearing informal clothes. They represent they teenage populous and appear to be 'hoodlums'. The boy stood in the far right of the image is pictured with a baseball bat.

2) Are there any stereotypes you can identify? One stereotype I can identify is the stereotype that teenagers are dangerous to society. Another one is that black youths are dangerous.

3) What is the preferred reading of this poster? The preferred reading of this poster is that these teenagers are dangerous. This is because they are imaged in a threatening stance, as they are staring directly at the camera. Also, one of the boys is holding a baseball bat, which can be seen as a weapon. In addition to this, they appear poor because they are wearing tattered clothes.

4) What is the oppositional reading of this poster? The oppositional reading of this text would be that the kids are misunderstood and in fact not dangerous at all, and in fact the opposite. They appear to be scared, as they are looking directly at us as if they are scared.
