Magazine Case Study LR

WWW- Very strong and impressive, GCSE level analysis of both magazines. So impressed with your accurate use of media terminology and the way you always push yourself to do the extensions and write in depth about each of the magazine conventions. Strong links made between features, their connotations and their appeal to target audience. You also understand Preferred and Oppositional readings which is a hard concept.

EBI- When discussing stereotypes for Reveal, (question 3), think more about how reality tv shows are stereotyped (not very intelligent / 'everyman' just like us etc) and also think of stereotypes of the working-class audience that are reinforced through the images and cover lines.

LR- For extension of Tatler, look more closely at cover lines to pull out more specific 'issues' across the other editions you found, e.g beauty is important but only if you are willing to pay for it (the implication is that more expensive brands are preferable).

Reveal (Q3)

The main difference in the audiences of Reveal and Tatler is that Tatler's audience, generally, is more educated and wealthier, I know this because Tatler's magazines have much more sophisticated language in them and talk about more expensive themes, for example, Fashion and Parties, which highly contrasts the gossip-based magazine Reveal. In addition to this, the psychographic group that Tatler is aimed at is the Aspirers; Succeeders and the Resigned, whereas Reveal is aimed at the Mainstreamers and Strugglers. These psychographics' could be argued to be polar opposites to one another. Reveal's audience is mainly lower-class and Tatler's audience is higher-class; Reveal's audience prefers gossip whereas Tatler's audience prefers fashion; Reveal's audience is arguably less educated, unlike Tatler's audience which has a higher education. In addition to this, the stereotypes of the celebrities in Reveal include them being slightly dumber; simple; down to earth and these stereotypes make them more relatable to the audience, which is something that Tatler wouldn't be able to do with this audience.
