Introduction
The TV series is called A5H. The show is a 13 episode long season, following the narrative arc of a single protagonist. It is about an escaped human experiment named A5H who meets a young boy, who helps her hide from her creators and adjust to normal life, as well as focusing on the friendship both of them develop. The boy, Blake, finds her after she ran away from the facility that experimented on her, and offers her a place to live with him. He helps her learn about the world and protects her from the agency trying to get her back. He acts as a surrogate brother and helps her grow like a normal teenage girl, and in return, she helps Blake open up to others and grow as a person throughout the show. Along the narrative of the show, we see how A5H's abilities develop and grow. The extract is from the end of episode 3 when agents locate her at school, and she is forced to run and hide, with Blake, before her veins suddenly start to glow.
Media Language and Representation
I will film in a scientific setting (a science classroom), the street and in a house. The excerpt will include both A5H, the protagonist, and Blake. Applying Todorov's theory of equilibrium, the extract begins in equilibrium, with A5H in her science lesson, and this is disturbed by the agent, and there will be a resolve when A5H escapes, but a disequilibrium will be created when her veins begin to glow. The extract will use a range of shots; I will use a POV to give the audience the protagonist's perspective, for example, there is a scene in which someone looks into a window, which I plan to use a POV shot in to create a sense of tension and an enigmatic code around who is in the window. I will also use a PS for a scene in which A5H is running away from the secret agent; I will use this shot to maintain a fast pace. The sequence will use both diegetic sounds in the form of dialogue, foley sound and atmosphere for instance when A5H reflexively hits Blake, as well as non-diegetic sounds in the form of background music and narration. The narrative enigma will come from the mystery around why A5H's veins start to glow and how her character will respond to the change.
The science-fiction genre of the extract will be evident to the audience through the use of many mise-en-scene items that are staples of the genre. The extract will include white-blue lighting (School strip-lights), dialogue directly associated with the Sci-Fi genre such as "my arms are glowing", also, neon makeup when A5H's veins begin to glow, which are all characteristics of the Sci-Fi genre. I will use a futuristic metal remote as a prop which creates an enigma for the audience as to what it is going to do. The settings in the extract are reflective of the Sci-Fi genre since science classrooms and other mise-en-scene like science teachers and physics books which are staples of the sci-fi genre. The camera work and editing will be a combination of sharp and rough shots like when A5H is running or when she is panicking at home, to help highlight a sci-fi genre, as well as audio that is typical of the genre like 'scientific' music. I will use a fade to white at the end of the excerpt which is also reflective of the genre because it suggests sterility and experimentation, like the white of a doctor's laboratory, which also links back to the protagonist's origins.
The protagonist is a dominant female, subverting stereotypes that women are delicate. Her strength will be shown in her single-handedly escaping the agent. According to Propp's character theory: A5H's character could be seen as a Hero since she is both the protagonist and is fighting against the villain (The Agent), and her quest seemingly begins with the introduction of her new powers. However, Blake's character is reinforcing the stereotype that geeks are considered weak. Blake will wear a T-Shirt that has a pop-culture sci-fi reference to both enforce the fact he is geeky and, create a sense of nostalgia in older audiences. Blake could be seen as the Sidekick or the Donor since he helps A5H escape and looks after her, and he needs to be protected by her character, like when he is pushed away by A5H for his safety. The villain of the excerpt is the agent chasing her, as he attempts to stop A5H on her quest to live a normal life, by chasing her at school.
Audience
The target audience is Mainstream working-class families, who enjoy science, teenage drama and fiction. Another TV show the audience would have enjoyed is Tomorrow People. By basing the show in a working-class neighbourhood, the audience can relate more closely to the characters. Additionally, the protagonist is a high school student which many teenage girls could relate to, and there is also a male teenage protagonist that male audiences could relate with. A5H's personality is quite easy for audiences to reflect themselves upon, and her relationship with Blake is a subversive one, as she is the more dominant and protective figure between the two. Both characters rely deeply on one another, and their relationship is that of siblings, which allows family audiences to project their relationships onto the characters. The series will include many fast-paced shots and editing techniques which provides the audience with the gratification of Diversion. Also, the show includes teenage characters that are relatable as well and individual narrative arcs to provide gratifications of Personal Identity and Personal Relationships with the characters as the show progresses.
